Disposable Diapers vs. Clothes

Cloth or disposable? Is one better than the other? This debate has been going on since the 70s and 80s. Each side would say the other is more superior. But cloth diapers are making a comeback with new flushable liners.

Cloth diapers are what all mothers used until disposable diapers became mainstream. Not as convenient or easy to dispose are these diapers. But, at one time, cloth was all a mother had to work with. Our mother’s diapers today are not cloth diapers. Mothers can now easily flush the waste down the toilet because of new flushable liners. Many now have velcro closure tabs; no more large safety pins!

The history of disposable diaper started in Sweden with PauliStrom in 1492. When it came to the first disposables, they had an inner lining which were made up of tissue paper layers. They showed up in the marketplace during the 1960s after pulp mill replaced tissue paper. At that time they were fairly expensive. Today’s disposable have an even more absorbent inner layer that they are more convenient than before. These diapers have been on the market for only 40 years but still, we’ll be feeling their effects for thousands of years.

One of the biggest issues of this debate are those effects. Those who believe cloth is better because disposable diapers are not very biodegradable. Disposables remain in landfills around 500 years because of the type of materials used and the amount of processing they go through. Many countries throughout the world have banned leaving untreated human waste in landfills. Diapers are then incinerated which leaves almost no residue. But these measures aren’t taken by every country.

Also a point of contention is cost. How much water and electricity are you using to launder the diapers, how many diapers do you use per month, and how much are you spending on diaper service are questions you need to consider. On each side for cost, there are a lot of valid. You may spend $50-$80 per month if you use strictly disposables and you may spend the same when using cloth diapers and a service. But to use cloth and launder them yourself, you may spend $25 to $60 per month.

It is all a matter of choice. There are parents who would use cloth diapers at home and disposables when they go out. Strictly using one or the other is what other parents do. But as parents, it’s up to you to make the right choices.
