5 Tips For Parents Of Teenagers

All parents dread the teenage years, and it certainly does not help that they seem to be starting earlier each year. Parents should expect and learn to deal with their teenage children’s unreasonable whims and caprices with patience and tolerance. Parents of teenagers should take a cue from the useful tips discussed below.

Encourage open conversations early.
Open conversations foster trust and confidence and children will be encouraged to open up about their problems, in the process keeping you informed of their activities. Ideally, you should start having regular conversations with them at or about 12 years of age and you can encourage that by showing forbearance and understanding.

Keep your expectations high
If your expectations are high, then they are more liable to satisfy it. Don’t lower the standards of behaviour or grades that you expect from them just because they are teenagers.

Support them always
Teenagers normally feel resentment against adults who they perceive are not fair with them, so you should disabuse of them of that thinking. It does not mean however that you should forgo discipline and obedience, rather the idea is to gain their trust and confidence.

Don’t be a friend
They don’t want your friendship. They want a parent they can run to. They need your guidance, advice, and love. Friends are for companionship, but parents are family and home.

You are the villain
Saying no to your children is always a difficult thing to do, especially if they seethe with the feeling that you are unjustifiably against everything they do. Giving in to your teenager’s every demand may make them like you, but they won’t respect you, and you won’t be doing them any favors either. Being their hate object is the lesser evil than allowing them to go astray, for a few years at least.

Teenagers are torn between wanting to be treated as adults, but still needing to be treated as children sometimes. It’s a fine balance, but learning when your child needs you to give them more responsibility and when to give them a hug and kiss it all better will help you to understand them and interact with them more easily. If all else fails, keep your eye on the future it’s just a phase they’ll grow out of!
